Default Maintenance Schedule

Just curious, what maintenance schedule does everyone follow with their Pilot? In particular, I was wondering about the oil change intervals that everyone is following.

On oil changes, I've gotten into the habit of changing it every 5,000 miles or so. It's easier to keep track of, just whenever the odometer hits a multiple of 5,000 - it's time.

Living in Maine is close enough to Canada for me to follow the severe schedule as noted in the owners manual (every 3750 miles).

Just had first OFL at 7100 (Close as I could get to the first change 7500 mark). Will go 5000 for OFL after this. Normal schedule pretty much but maybe do transmission fluid change at every 30K with the Honda transmission history.

I go by severe due to the Atlanta traffic.

Severe.

60% stop and go traffic and 40% freeway driving based on daily routine!

We use severe too. My wife has a two mile drive to work every day. The Pilot barely warms up before it's parked again.

I'm with you Titans Fan, every 5000 miles. I've done it with every car I've owned, and I'll probably continue to do it with every car I own. My reasons include:

>Easy to remember
>Occurs about every 5-6 months, which seems to be a good interval for checking everything over (fluids, belts, brakes, etc.)
>I have difficulty subscribing to the "normal" versus "severe" driving categories. More specifically, I can't really say with much scientific certainty how much of the driving is one or the other.

Normal.

Do mostly highway (85 percent of the time) and at high speeds (usually 75+). Don't tow. And although toxic, NJ isn't that dusty.

Normal. 90% highway, 10% city.

5000 is where I plan to go. Matches any more significang 15/30k service schedule that manaufactures tend to run as major service points.

So much of the stuff is level checking that I will not pay $80an hour or what ever to do.

Wow, it's really close between the two schedules.

For those people following the "normal" schedule, how many miles do you have on your Pilot? I'm curious to see if there are any long-term affects of following the "normal" schedule. In the past, I've always followed the "severe" schedule for my cars, but I've heard more and more that modern oils can be used for longer intervals.

I don't think anyone here has reported a single "maintenance related" failure, so the information you are looking for probably does not exist.

There is NOTHING wrong with following the manufacturers recommendation. If there was we would see a line of cars in for service because so many people barely follow the minimum in maintenance.

You can always split the difference, there is NOTHING magic about the numbers in the chart.

I think there are just to many variables.

I have a 1992 car and use regular dino oil. The oil and filter gets changed (on average) every 15,000 miles/18 months since I got the car new. Last oil change was at 186,000 miles and the one before that 171,000 miles. Not cheap, just lazy.

No problems/issues with engine performance. The only engine/oil related problems I noticed was some sludge and a couple of seals which I replaced to fix oil leaks. In the case of the latter, I attributed the seal problem to wearing out the additives in the oil, but the dealer told me the seals just worn out due to mileage/age.

I have a 1990 car which I got used with 80,000 miles and put about another 110,000 miles on it. The oil and filter change interval was even worse. I do not drive this car anymore because the cost to repair (e.g., new exhaust manifold, new cat, new tires) exceeds the value of the car, but I had no engine/oil related problems that I can remember.

Would the problems I had with the seals not occured following the "normal" or "severe" schedule. Who knows?

The Pilot is under warrenty so it gets it's oil/filter changed on schedule. Or maybe it because I not the one that gets to drive it . I wonder why?
