Default Changing timing belt

Trying to change the timing belt on my '03 pilot. Crankshaft pulley bolt seems to want to stick...can't get it loose, even with an impact wrench. A straight breaker bar just turns the engine. Any tips on how to get this loose?

Forgive my ignorance, but is this what you're looking for? It's the fourth pictures posted in the thread.

I remember reading this thread a while back when I used to frequent the site looking for a possible solution to my pinging/ratchety sound problem and thinking how his handle was appropriate. And I mean that in a complementary way

You need a Honda/Acura Harmonic Damper pulley holder to remove the bolt.

Thanks guys. I had searched hondapilot.org for timing belt, but didn't see very many discussions. Didn't know I should have been on the acura board!

I guess it off to Honda to buy that tool (and something to protect my ribcage as well).

PsychoKnight is right about needing tiny hands and tiny tools to work on the Pilot. Believe it or not, swapping the entire drivetrain on my Kia disposable sedan was easier than getting at the Pilot timing belt (don't ask why I was swapping the entire drivetrain on a disposable sedan, but suffice it to say that it prompted the timing belt change on the Pilot).

Thanks

105,000 miles/168,000 km or 84 months for the timing belt.

Hello,

Just wondering if you had any feedback as to how hard a job this is? I've done a timing belt/water pump on a 90 Civic and a 92 Audi so I am not too foreign to the process. Doesn't look all that bad, just wondering if there are any gotcha's along the way. About how long does it take? Anyone know what the stealership charges for this service? That may make the decision for me...

I need to find a procedure (or buy a service manual), I don't know why I keep putting that off. Is the OEM honda pilot service manual any good?

Thanks!

I couldn't find the estimates for the Pilot, but we had the timing belt changed recently on our 99 CRV for about $245. We also had the TB change on an 92 Accord we previously owned, and it was "around" $300 (that was a long time ago, but I remember it wasn't cheap).

Markjmay, that's a lot of miles for 3 years old car... I wonder who has the most miles on Pilot and who's already done this service, either DIY or by stealership?

The wife put on 85,000 in 3 years. Since I just had a broken timing belt destroy my motor on my other disposable sedan, I figured I should change the belt on the Pilot. I received my crank pulley tool from Amazon.com yesterday ($12.97 plus shipping), so I think I'm ready to tackle this job. About $120 it looks like to do it (manual: $70, tool: $13, timing belt: $37).

Not sure how many beers it will take yet.

Is the Pilot a zero clearance motor? ie will the valves hit the pistons if this is not done?

So, you're not going to change the water pump while everything else is apart?

To put it another way, are you sure that the water pump won't need replacing before 210,000 miles?

From my experience of doing two other timing belt jobs I would strongly encourage anyone who is changing their timing belt to go ahead and change out the water pump while you are in there. It's usually just a matter of a few extra bolts. Well worth it for the peace of mind that your water pump isn't going to seize after you get it all back together with your new timing belt (and thus have to more or less redo the job again).

I think I am going to replace my accessory and power steering belts while I am at it as they look to be easily accessible during this job as well. I got 89,000 miles on my 03 Pilot so this job is right around the corner for me

Default Zero Clearance Motor?

That's a good question...
Where can we get this info?

Maybe someone with Odyssey have info on this? as they have the same motor?
