Question Mobil 1 (or Synthetic engine oil)

I use 10W-30 Mobil 1 oil for my Pilot oil change...

However... is it really worth it?

and oil change shop wants me to go with 5W-20...

I didn't ask him why...

is there anyone with good engine oil knowledge?

thanks...

I believe IIRC that the manual says to use 5W20 which I have never heard of in a vehicle. I saw some Mobil Synthetic the other day that was 0W20 and was labeled for Hondas.

I have heard that the auto manufacturers have to run in the Corporate Fuel Economy Fuel Average tests (CAFE) what they allow to be used everyday. Hence if they want to use a lightweight oil in the test to get better fuel economy then that is what has to be in the manual.

I've had several cars (not all Hondas) that required oil of a weight lower than 10W-30. The bottom line here is that Honda engineers, the designers of your engine, specify 5W-20. I'm sure it's partly because it yields better gas mileage, but I'm also fairly confident that the engine was designed and optimized to run on it.

Default Synthetic oil benefits

From 1981 thru 1885 I raced in the Can-AM series. Most of the cars used 5.0 Liter GM engines and a typical good engine made around 520 (dyno) HP @ 8300 rpm. These cars were all mid-engine and the oil temperatures ran really hot. In 1982 I picked up a sponsorship from Red Line Oil. Running Red Line’s synthetic oil in those engines brought oil temps down 30 degrees. Most standard street engines aren’t running that close to the edge, but lowering oil temps has got to help any engine

Tried to do a search for Mobil 1 but the search engine won't let you do that since the "1" is too small a character. I think entering Mobil+1 that is to type the word Mobil 1 with a plus sign between it and no spaces will work. (Haven't seen any documentation on it but it seems to work)

Here is one thread
First Oil Change, When?

Take note of the person Bugshu, he seems VERY knowledgeable about oil and stuff.

Royal Purple Motor Oil .....

Different thread
mobile 1 5w-20

For oil Filters try here Which Oil Filter?

(You can see rilley tried to do a search but was kinda overwhelmed with the results. Searches can be that way)

I found Castrol Syntec 5w20 at Wal Mart. It's a full synthetic oil.

Castrol Syntec is not a full synthetic oil. It's a marketing tactic. They don't use PAO as their synthetic base, they use a lower costing base-stock. Do a google search and you'll see tons of articles, most of which mention how Mobil 1 sued Castrol for using the word "synthetic" on the bottle even though Castrol did not use a synthetic base. They lost, and the National Advertising Division of the BBB gave Castrol the right to say "full synthetic" even though it's not.

Synthetic motor oil gets all new semantics.

A definition of PAO for those that are interested.

For most people, synthetic oil is overkill and not a good value.

If you use your vehicle harder then most AND plan to keep it longer than most, then MAYBE a synthetic oil might be worthwhile. (big maybe).

If you do want to use a synthetic oil, the marginal differences between the specific types of synthetic oil bases is probably even smaller than the difference between conventional and synthetic oils over all.

Whether using a synthetic or a conventional oil, still use an oil that falls within the manufacturers recommendations from a major supplier and you will be safe.

Do you have any references that are more recent? I'm wondering if Castrol reformulated since then. According to their MSDS, the oil is synthetic. Mobil and Amsoil would love for us to think that they are the only true synthetics, whatever that means.

I can't find anything with a quick look, but if you've got a spare week or two you can go to Bobistheoilguy.com and take a look at the forums over there. More than you'll ever need to know about oil.

The last time I checked Castrol's MSDS, Syntec is composed of "60-90% Synthetic hydrocarbons" and "10-30% Multi-functional additive mixture composed of organo-metallic compounds, typically containing zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate, copolymers, calcium salts of alkylated phenol sulfides, polyolefins, polyolefin amide alkeneamines, and other proprietary ingredients."

So I take that to mean that it's still a Group3/Group4 blend basestock.

Come on, guys. I thought this thread was going to get fun. It could be debated forever. No, MY oil is better......
The 0-20w. recommended by Honda is for the Civic Hybrid & Insight. The rest of the newer Hondas get 5-20w.
FWIW I use Mobil-1, 10/30 in the Pilot. Amsoil M/C in the Ninja.
My best advise is to spend time checking out the link provided above, bobistheoilguy.com.
