Default First service - $165 ??

My wife called the Honda dealer to set up an appointment for the 7500 mile service.

As far as I can see, according to the manual, that's basically an oil change and tire rotation.

The delaer quoted $165 for the service, and said it 'involves more than just an oil change'. No specifics on what it is exactly that they do.

Any comments and experiences appreciated.

Thanks

Ask for a quote for only those things listed in the owners manual. Our local dealer gets $90 for the 7.5K but it includes more than what the manual recommends. A lot of the extras are just inspections that at 7.5K really add no value.

Find out exactly what B.S. extras are being included. Then ask the cost for what Honda recommends, not the dealer service department. If you have another dealer in town, see if they will beat the price. Go back and forth until you get the best price.

Good luck.

Had mine done end of May. Oil change & tires rotated, front tires balanced... cost $45 plus tax. ($24.95 for oil change and $20 for tires)

Sounds like the "more" part your dealer is talking about is "more" profit for them.

Lets see....

Oil Change - $25
Tire Rotation - $20
RCF - $120
TOTAL: $160

RCF - Rape the Customer Fee, an additional amount charged to make up for all thoes under invoice sales of Pilots generated by customers reading www.hondapilot.org

Don't pay it! Just ask for an oil change and this is all you need, IMO. Even a tire rotation at 7.5K is a bit much. I have always done tires at 15K and never had any problems with uneven wear, etc.

about 3 weeks ago I had my first oil change at the dealer where I purchased the car. Mileage was about 6,300 miles. Yesterday I get a letter from them suggesting I call them to schedule the 7,500 mile service.

WTF? why didn't someone say something when I got my oil change? DOPES!

I called to see what the 7500 service includes -> oil change, drain plug, oil filter, rotate and balance tires, useless 75 million point inspection. At that point I was so annoyed I hung up without asking how much this bogus service cost.

eh, next oil change I'll simply instruct the dealer to rotate the tires.

First of all, those service menu's are a bunch of crap. Tell the dealer to stick his service menu you know where, and show him the recommended schedule in your manual. That is what you need to follow. Not all that B.S about inspect to make sure the rear bumper is attached and so on,!!!

If you have an extended service plan like Honda Care, following the recommended within reason is always good, in case you are ever challenged on a repair.

At least its not as bad as the 80's when they sold Fabric protection and paint protection. Usually the person that sold it to you was a beautiful blond with a 002 IQ and a body that insured that she would never require one higher.

And then after that you had to deal with the service menu's

Take care gang.

lol. My dealer quote $185cdn for it too, but it's more of 2nd maintenance in Canada. 1st one is only oil/filter change.

It should include oil/filter/tire rotation/lube hinge

This is where the dealer can finally make more money from customers.
I will just tell them to do the oil change and rotate tires myself and then leave the hinge lube for the 4th maintenance.

discovered my new boss is on his second pilot

when he goes in he limits them to oil change and tire rotation. that keeps the cost down.

I'd do the tires myself if I wasn't so dam lazy

I wouldn't mind doing the 7500 mile service myself either but after reading all that is involved in reprogramming the TPMS for the new tire locations, I'll let the service department do it.

For the oil change, I'm almost afraid to ask them what additional charge there will br to go with synthetic oil

My understanding is that the system "auto locates" the new tire pressure sensors after rotation - you don't need to do a thing. Please correct if I'm wrong.

I'll have to double check the manual. I thought for sure it had a procedure in there that had to be done for the reprogramming
