Default Does your Pilot burn oil?

I go 7500 or so between oil changes and it seems to me that the oil level on my dipstick is at or near the bottom line on the scale after the 7500 miles. I use 5 qts total per oil change.

Has anyone else noticed this?

No, that seems like a lot of oil that you're burning (or leaking)--are you sure you got that right?

I don't smell any oil being burnt at all. All I know is this...I could be wrong...

When I fill up the crankcase with oil, it seems to go to the top mark. After 7500 miles, and maybe perhaps becasue the oil is dark and easy to see, it seems to be at the lower mark.

Are you checking the level after a change but before you run the engine? I could be wrong, but it seems to me that once you start up the engine the oil filter is going to fill with some of that oil so the dipstick level will then be lower than it was when before the filter got charged.

Also, are you waiting several minutes after shutting off the engine before you check the level? It takes a little time for oil to drain out of the engine back to the pan to see if the level is "right" according to your dipstick. (See the manual under the topic of Changing the Oil and Filter.) Lastly, are you sure you aren't leaking oil rather than burning it?

I check the oil after runnning the engine and then waiting a few minutes.

There are no leaks as my garage floor is perfectly clean. According to the Ody and MDX sites, burning a qt every 7500 miles is considered normal...

Doesn't the manual say 5.1 qts for the pilot. Maybe you're not putting enough oil in at fill up.

Do you see the oil level changing over time? Please don't tell me you never check your oil level between changes.

Mine drops about 1/8 of an inch on the dipstick in 7500 miles. Hardly noticeable. I also check my oil every week, (gotta add windshield washer fluid anyways).

I generally change the oil at around 5000 miles; for the last few hundred miles before that (4500 to 4800 or so) the oil level is still at the full mark (but that's with a hot engine).

Being "down" one quart, or less, in 7500 miles would be considered "normal". Sure, I have no perceptible loss of oil (probably no more than 1/4 quart) between oil changes and that's great. But you only need to add oil after it drops below a qt., and if you don't need to do it between changes, there's no problem. Hey, even if you had to add a qt. once between changes, it wouldn't be a big deal. That's why most cars come with a place to add oil. At what point do you do an engine overhaul? That's a personal choice.

P.S. It shouldn't really matter whether you check the oil with the engine hot or cold. As long as it's not running.

This is consistent with my practice and experience, although I avoid checking the oil with a hot engine - usually check in the mornings before driving.

BTW, I have never had a Honda engine in any of my motorcycles "use" oil (nor any other Japanese bike).

YMMV

what burning oil already? Well, I do not see any decrease in my oil. Then again, I am using M1 0/30

But it does matter how soon after shutting it off you check the oil.

Give it a good 5 min for the oil to get back into the pan.

Cold is easiest to get consitant results.

Also, check it teh moring after an oil change. You may not be starting full.

I change the oil at 5000 miles...

Usually down a quart...

It is pretty dark also...

No worries...
