Default 7.5k miles servicing

Hi all:
I am wondering if somebody could let me know about this. I have 9000 miles on my 04 pilot. Drove across the country and yet to service. I have had only 2 oil changes so far.
Called in the dealer, and he recommended 7.5 miles servicing and quoted 189$ at CT state. Is this a fair charge? Should I opt for 9000 miles servicing?

are there any cheaper alternative to do this? (like buy those fluids myself and change).

thanks,

drb

Default Re: 7.5k miles servicing

I can't see what would cost $189 to 'service' at only 7,500.

According to Honda the only thing that is needed is to rotate the tires and change the oil. There are a few things to check (fluids, breaks) but that should not take more than a few min. of time.

I would ask for a list of each thing the dealer is suggesting be done and the cost for each. My guess is they are giving you the worlds more expensive oil change

at 7.5K I think the main thing is oil change and tire rotation. I am sure if you ask for a breakdown you will see things like...fluid inspection for $30, belt inspection $40, brake inspect $40 and BS like this...

Beware of what the dealer offers at recommended service. I went in for my 22,500 mile service on my '04 and they had $189 for four wheel alignment plus other stuff. I asked about the alignment and they said it was recommended by the dealer, not by Honda. No funny wear on the tires, no pull one way or the other going down the road, no tire or handling issues at all, so I said naaah. Had I just signed their service request, I would have paid for something I definitely didn't need or want. The total bill for this service including new wiper blades was about $150, which with all the other fluids they changed and other adjustments they made I felt was worth it.

IMO you should never tell the dealer to just do "xxxx mile service". Ask them to do specific things....

Thanks all for the reply. I called the dealer again after getting your inputs. He said, since I have 9000 miles on it, he is going to do a combination of 7.5 and 10K miles servicing on it. There are some differences between these 2 servicing (from the manual).

So 189$ - could it be justified?

I have appointment wednesday morning, please reply asap. it would help me a lot.

thanks,

drb

there is not 10K service.....at 10750 you just have to change oil if you have a severe schedule...for normal schedule you do nothing at 10K...

again.. itemize what you wnat done from the owners manual and make them price that...

Thumbs up it is true!

I am glad people are helping me out. I saved 50% of my money today because of the postings. Hats off to hondapilot.org!!!!

I called another dealer in a different area. He quoted 70$. He said I don't need to change transmission and differential fluids at 9000 miles (on my car). This is what he is going to do.

1. top of fluids, check tires, replace engine oil
2. rotate tires (and I believe all the stuff that comes underneath in the manual likre replace engine oil filter, brake wears etc)

man!, one can't even wink eyes for a sec. people are there to rip you off.

glad you saved money...but it is still too high IMO... (not sure where you are located but...)
check tres, fluid etc are always part of oil change at Honda dealers...this should be around $30.
tire rotation : $20 . Total :$50....

you dont need anything else right now..

and you should be good to go till 15K

I just had service performed earlier today @ 7500 miles, the dealer suggested a $199 "7500mi service".

This service consisted of a L,O,F, a bunch of checks and inspections, and replacement of the rear differential fluid! What a joke! I asked about the Honda recommendation of 15K for the differential fluid replacement. And all that was stated was that they recommend following the "severe service" schedule. I responded by telling that that all I wanted to do just a L,O,F with the coupon I received in the mail from them and a tire rotation, an that would be sufficient and sure enough, they were ok with that.

Total bill, including the misc charges, shop supplies, disposal fees etc was only $45.56 total!

Even when I hit 15k, I am not going for the $199 service. I plan to request only the differential fluid change, LOF, rotation & change the air filter myself, and should be all done for less than $150.

I am still trying to decide weather I should have a service done @ 11,250 miles. It would only cost less than $30. But IMHO, it is not really needed - if we are driving the Pilot 15k/yr, It'll be back in 6 months. Twice a yr is sufficient for service with today's modern automobiles. All of the Mercedes & BMW vehicles with complimentary maintenance only do it about once a yr or 10,000 miles! If you wish to have it done more often you must pay out of pocket.

Twice a year is enough if that is all you drive. If you go to a goodyear store, they should rotate the goodyear factory tires for free, they do that here in Spokane anyway, so you should only have to pay for lof, which really is only an oil and filter change since there is nothing to grease, lube, anymore on the new cars. since all the dealers sell new cars at or near invoice, they need to make up profit somewhere and the service department is it....oh yeah, parts too. The owners manuel even says you do not need to change rear diff. fluid until 30,000 miles under normal use, which would be 90% of us since the car doesn't leave the pavement or do a lot of towing.

Default Now I know why they call'em Stealers

I had to take my Pilot in to have the sticking throttle body replaced and since Pilot is approaching 15,000 miles I asked the dealer to do a 15k service but NOT rotate the tires or change the oil. I figured that all they needed to do was drain and refill the VTM fluid. The charges broke down like this:

washer solvent : $2.25
CRC Cleaner : $5.95
VTM Fluid : $25.81
Crush Washer : $0.96
Crush Washer : $2.83
LABOR : $80.00
ENVIROMENTAL FEES : $11.78
Tax : $7.78

TOTAL : $137.36

I'll do it myself next time. @&#*&!* stealers

I asked the dealer the cost of replacing the VTM-4 fluid ONLY and was quoted "about $80."

When I brought my Pilot in for a steering problem that I was having, I also had the oil changed and tires rotated. This was at just before the 3500 mile mark.

Now I have 7800 miles. If you were me, would you wait before getting the tires rotated and oil changed, or would you do it ASAP?

In addition, what else should I get checked besides fluids and brakes?
