Default Brake Change

My brake wear sensors have started sounding off at 45,000 miles. How much further can I go before a brake job -- what is the intended lead time for this sensor?

Better change your brake pads right away before it ruins your rotors!

Pads are cheap, rotors are expensive, calipers are even more!

Your choice.

you should have the brakes done now. You should also have a service due.... oil change. Get them done at the same time. you prolly have about 100 to 150 miles left until you start to grind.

You lost me. What does the fact that his brake wear sensors are "sensing" have to do with getting an oil change? I also find it hard to believe that the sensors would be set thus that you would only have 100 to 150 miles left before there is damage to the rotors.

Does........eh......."Superior Honda Tech" mean you work for Honda? No offense but I don't see the connection between brakes and oil

I assume it is because the original poster said he has 45,000 miles on his Pilot, and since that's also one of the oil/service points, so why not have it all done at once?

That's what I thought as soon as I read his reply. Didn't lose me.

To me it sounded like the typical feedback you would get from a stealer - trying to get you in for any possible service work that they could. Just like when lube places put the little sticker on your window stating when your next service is due WITH NO KNOWLEDGE of what your driving habits are. They don't have a clue if it should be 3500 or 7500 or whatever. They automatically come up with a 3000 or 3500 interval - just for more business.

Sorry for the rant - off my

Oh yes - would still like to know what the 100 to 150 miles was based on.

basically it was based on personal experience working on them. Yes typically you have way more brake pad left. but not 7500 more miles when the next service after the 45 is due. Also I have no knowledge of the owner's driving habits and it is possible to start grinding around 100 miles after the sensor goes off. The brake pad could also be wearing unevenly and the side without the sensor could start grinding first. If you wait too long the sensor also could break off and then you dont know where you are in terms of life on the brake pad..... some people have told me they thought the brakes were fine when the sound went away.

I am just giving the best advice I possibly can and help avoid any unwanted extra maintenance.

yes I am a Honda Tech and have been for over 4 years.

N_jay and hondaman2 are right, brake pads are cheap, rotors are expensive. I had a set of front pads go out on a Chevy S-10 Blazer at 14,000 miles, lost one rotor, that cost $350.00 plus the cost of new pads and turning the remaining good rotor. The brakes never made a sound, this was my wife's suv and I drove it one day and hear a grinding sound!! It was not a bad grinding sound either just a very low pitch grrr. The total brake job came out to around $600.00, the S-10 Blazer had a lousy record with brake pads, needed to replace pads every 18,000-20,000 miles and my wife is not a hard driver and drove probably 65% highway. Brake pads do not last a given number of miles, they just wear out. The Pilot has 33,000 on the original set and the stealer said no need to even think about replacing. They measured 70% remaining on the original set.

We don't talk about the set of pads my wife let wear out on the Range Rover.

I did not catch it in time to save the caliper!!

Rotors are relitivly cheap!
