Default Check out the broken pulley!!!!!

This happened to me on the way to the gym. Very scary. I feel very lucky that this did not happen at highway speed. I have almost forgotten how hard a heavy car is to drive without power steering.

A little history. In the first two weeks of ownership (33k mi ago), they installed the towing package, and subsequently the PS pump failed and had to be replaced. I appears that the mechanic failed to completely fill the fluid, but I am unsure about that.

The current mechanic theorized that the PS repair 27mo ago, left the belt alignment off by a mm or 2, and led to premature fatigue.

All I gotta say, is I feel lucky.

Any thoughts......

Doing a quick search, there have been a few members with pulley problems. There may even be a TSB on it. It would appear that a fair number of problems occur after work o the pump or installation of coolers.

Here is one thread to check out here.

So sorry to hear about the malfunction of the PS pulley. I'm glad no one is hurt and no additional damage to the engine bay w/ the pulley sheering-off from its mounting like that. If any consolation, are you not glad it happen while still under warranty...

The broken PS pulley is usually due to improper torquing of the belt when doing service. It most often occured after the waterpump recall from way back, but could just as easily occur anytime the pulley belt is removed.

It's b/c the belt is supposed to be torqued to "used" specs rather than "new". IIRC there was mention of this in a Service News bulletin at some point, but not a TSB.

But all the other shear failures on that pulley were pretty much immediate.

You still have power steering if it breaks. Your power

You mean the torque spec changes after the car is driven a while?!! Sheesh! Now there's a maintainability nightmare.

That happened to me after a timing belt change, but luckily it only affected the A/C belt. Darn thing jammed in another pulley and made the most awful sound I had ever heard.

Someone owes you some free oil changes...

I knew that the dealers were aware of the issue...it may not have been a tsb though...My memory is a little foggy on this one...

Well, I didn't realize there were others with problems. It sure sounds like a lot of them are "operator errors" (ie mechanic issues). Even so, Honda probably should have anticipated that, don't you think?

Two other points:
I am extremely glad it was under warranty!
I am extremely happy with the no nonsense and quick action by the dealer to fix the problem.

(And with my wife on Christmas break, I had a built in ride to work the next day.....)

They didn't anticipate it, but they did correct the problem. The 03's and *maybe* some of the 04's have that same "golden" pulley. But the newer Pilots have a different pulley design and I think the material is different because it doesn't have that golden color. Our 03 broke exactly the same, but it was only two weeks after getting the timming belt auto-tensioner recall performed.

I peaked under the hood of a few floor models at the Dealer last year and the pulley's webbing and collar were thicker.

Is your replacement just like the broken one?
