Default 2004 Pilot - Flickering Reverse Indicator and reverse lights

I have a 2004 Pilot with about 64K miles on it, and it has been flawless since day one. No prior issues at all. Now, when you shift to reverse, the switch that would turn on the reverse lights and the change the R indicator on the dash does not seem to be making proper contact. You can jiggle the shift lever, and the light will flicker. No problems with the transmission itself as it properly shifts into reverse and drives fine. Just the switch for the lights/indicator seems to be a problem.

Could someone provide some guidance on where this switch is, what would be required to replace it etc? If it needs to be done by the dealer, how much it would cost etc.

Thanks for your assistance.

A handful of Older Pilots in salt areas have had issues with the shifter linkage. I suspect you might have that issue.

There is a sensor located on the side of the transmission shift shaft (behind the driver side tire). It connects the shifter, shift cable, and tranny shift shaft together. It's sole purpose is to relay the shift range position back to the computer to light up the display and electronically adjust the fluid pressure and shift points.

Here is the part

Sometimes the seal between the two halves breaks down and allows gunk to build up on the contacts and you get inconstant feedback to the computer. In this case it needs to be removed, disassembled and cleaned.

Other times the switch mounting just needs to be adjusted. You can try adjusting the switch by loosening the two mounting bolts and wiggling it until the lights on the dash line up with the shift level position.

Also the shaft that runs into the tranny go into the slotted hole in this switch. That shaft has a seal around it that could break down and allow tranny fluid to leak directly on the switch causing the problem.
