Default 13mpg?

=Just got a 2008 with 50k miles and I'm getting 13-14mpg with 50/50 city/highway driving. Any idea why?

What do you call City driving, and what do you call highway driving?
What is your 50/50 mix like?
How are you measuring your mileage?

does the pilot seem to run correctly? how much do you let it idle? are the tire pressures correct? is the air filter clogged?

air filter brand new, driving highway is 60mph, runs correctly, idle 5-10 min at most. Tire pressure 35 all around for winter.

4wd, or FWD ?
Maybe the gas has enthanol or other winter additives?

Highway is 60 MPH for what typical distance? (In traffic or fairly open road?)

How often idling for 5 to 10 min? Once a day? Twice?

Again, How did you measure the MPG?

Unless you are towing with a roof box there is something wrong. You are due for timing belt change based on age.

One person's city or 50/50 driving may be dramatically different than another. There are tens of factors - how hard you accelerate, braking habits, idling time, warmup time, cargo, roof racks, tires, how hilly the terrain, teenagers in the family, etc. etc. etc. In my regular driving, I transit a surburban road with a ton of curves and I see drivers every day who brake on every one of the curves, whereas I am able to maintain and exceed their pace while not braking at all. Assuming equivalent vehicles, I bet my mileage is 50% better than theirs on this stretch of road.

For a car that has a 15/20 city/highway EPA rating, it is not terribly hard to average 13 overall. I consider my driving pretty reasonable and get about 15 overall in 70/30 urban/highway. I occasionally get 13. I'm in very hilly terrain though.

If the car checks out otherwise, I suspect nothing is wrong. If you really want to know if your car has abnormal mileage, you need to get it out on the highway and get a read on highway mileage, hand computed from gas receipts and the odometer. It should get around 20 at around 65 mph. This is the only way to remove the variables and get a decent comparison basis.

How'd a timing belt change get mixed up in this? A worn timing belt is at risk of failure, but is not going to cause a decrease in mileage. And a 2008 with 50K isn't due for a change anyway, by either mileage or calendar time. If you want to start working down a few things that might help, I'd put a new set of plugs in as there is some evidence that changing them at 50K rather than 100K might prevent other problems.

Timing belt is 7 years or 105K miles, whichever comes first.
