Default Heat shield rattle

I've had this issue before and found it was the long heat shield which was fixed by adding a washer. Now I have another rattle which sounds like it's coming further forward on the car and only rattles when driving usually around 2-3000rpm. Can someone show or tell me where the possible culprit may be? I don't think it's the cat shield as I've checked that one. Maybe there is one I'm missing forward of that?

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

It might be the catalytic converter shield. Look mid-way under the car for a loose shield. And if that's the case you can use bolts/washers or a large hose clamp for the fix.

Well I still have the rattle and have checked all the shields and they are solid. Does anyone else have any ideas? This is driving me nuts trying to find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There was an issue with a throttle cable clip under the hood on the left side.

A search of real old threads might find it.

I've checked the throttle cable and didn't find a problem. I did find this however http://dvpatel.homelinux.com/forumfiles/SB/A07-028.PDF and I'm hoping it's not it. It looks like alot of work to fix a rattle. Anyone had this TSB done yet?

That would be a lot of work to replace, but not to diagnose. You should be able to reach that and check from under the vehicle or through the passengers side wheel well.

BTW: Did you get under there and just bang on the exhaust with the meaty part of your hand? This should vibrate the exhaust enough to find rattles. I had a rattle under my 05 TL once and it turned out to be one of the catalytic converters. One of the bricks inside had come loose somehow. Expensive fix that was covered under warranty. Just something to look for I guess

To add to what 94eg said - I had the same annoying rattle with a car. Turned out to be a pebble that found it's way inside one of the heat shields, God only knows how it got in there. Banging on the exhaust located it. The shields themselves were solid. That little #$%# was a REAL bugger to get out but solved it for good and for free.

Well, it looks like I'll have to break down and take it to the dealer. Since the weather's been nice I decided to jack it up and take all the shields apart. While alot of rust and debris was found none of it was the source of the rattle. I'm baffled at what it could be unless it actually is that intermediate shaft heat shield in the TSB. I hope they'll cover it as I'm out of the 3/36 warranty and doubt it's covered under the powertrain or emissions warranty. Hopefully they'll allow a goodwill fix and be done with it.

Well, we found the rattle. It was up front and was the shield in the middle of this picture

underneath where the wire comes out of the exhaust. Put a clamp on it and all is quiet.
