Default Transmssion over heated

About a month ago my d4 started flashing and like many others i turned the car off and the light went away. Last week while driving up to the mountains my transmission started jerking like crazy and the rpm starting jumping up and down, i pulled over and heard the trans oil boiling. I sat for about an hr to let the oil cool and was able to turn around and drive back home with no problems. With the transmission over heating the way it did should i even bother trying to repair it or should i just get it rebuilt? I need some advise before making this every expensive decision.

Need to pull codes and attempt to determine cause before deciding what to do. There are many electrical components that could have failed and caused the condition. Sometimes, a cheaper alternative can be found to repair the tranny and delay replacement. Also, check fluid level. Also, check radiator for signs of trans fluid leaking into it from the built in trans fluid cooler. If you do repair that trans (as opposed to replacement), be sure to replace that burnt fluid, too.

Curious, how did you hear the trans oil boil?

Another question, did the trans temp light illuminate?
