Hello All-
I am a new member to this forum, but have read many helpful posts over the years! I am experiencing a frustrating noise from my 2004 Pilot EX and would love some ideas. The vehicle has 130,xxx miles and the most recent work done was the timing belt and water pump 1000 miles ago as preventative maintenance. I do as much maintenance as possible myself but the timing belt was done at a local shop. After a recent 400 mile trip the car developed a noise I can't pinpoint. A tire shop put it on a rack and did drive test with me and ruled out brakes, tires and c/v joint as far as they are concerned. The sound only can be heard when moving forward between 10-25 MPH. It is easier to hear when under power driving straight. The sound can be heard loudly in 1st and 2nd gear when moving, and briefly when shifted into neutral but only for a few seconds and faintly. It does not occur in reverse. It is not worse with wheels turned. There is no loose plastics or fairings under vehicle. It still can be heard with brakes lightly applied under power. To me it sounds axle or transmission related but I'm trying to start with obvious and cheap fixes first. Here is a YouTube video I shot in my phone that may help. Forgive the jerkiness, I was driving! Noise can be heard best around time marker :35 seconds. Thanks so much! |

Hi, have you got it figured out and fixed?
I am looking for similar answer. My 2006 Pilot has been well maintained. But this morning on my way to the office, it started to emit strange noise. It sounded like "Duh Duh Duh..." as if there was a flat tire. The noise goes away when idle. All tires are inflated fine and nothing unusual jumps out when I visually inspected around the car. Has any one encountered the same or similar problem and what is your suggestion? Thanks in advance. -P |

I took it to my local Honda dealer. They diagnosed with complete transmission failure specifically in second gear. Quoted me $4500 to repair. When I said I would go elsewhere they dropped price to $3400. LOL.
I called Honda America they refused to do anything. I have driven about 2000 miles since they told me to replace. I'm gonna drive it till it dies. If I can be of more help please let me know. For me it only makes audible noise in 1st and 2nd gear. I'm thinking it has more to do with the torque convertor but I'm not a certified Honda mechanic, nor do I want to be! Good luck! |

When it dies, have it replaced with a low mileage used tranny. Much cheaper and actually better than a poorly rebuilt unit. I have had very good luck with used Japanese car/truck transmissions.
