Default Windshield + bad install = @$#%##@%@#%!!!!

So I bought my '06 used a few months back. It's been a great ride, and I really enjoy it (especially the new 4300K HIDs in the projectors) but I learned something fun... there was some sort of a leak coming from the windshield area. Great. Joy. Yay.

About a week or two back, stone shot on the driver's side, up in the blue shaded portion. >.< Give it a few to see if...yep, cold weather with warmer days, craaack down into my line of sight, 6" and on it goes.

Call a recommended place out here and they are outside right now putting in the new windshield. Just about $300. Yay. Wait what? Phone rings, better come out here...

Previous installer (this was not an OEM windshield) had some bubbles in the urethane when setting the windshield in, caused a nice big gap where water was getting in, AND they didn't use primer so there is surface rust all along the inside of the channel.

I'm about to pop.

SO now I get to call up my insurance company tomorrow to see if I have coverage to get this taken to a body shop before the rust spreads.

Just a minor bit of griping/venting and an FYI to check these things out when/if you ever get a windshield replacement.

We are having a windshield done tomorrow. I have them done at a body shop that has a windshield guy. Very high quality and they only use OE manufacturer windshields. We actually have rust starting along the roofline edge due to rock hits. Hopefully it hasn't spread inside the channel. At least it is at a body shop already if it does.

I don't think insurance is going to cover it for you though. It wasn't accident damage/fire/etc. damage.

Did they put in the new windshield or seal the old one back up until you get it fixed?

I opted to put in the new windshield, the crack in the old one got so much worse when it was removed, didn't really have the option to leave it in place.

I'm not hopeful about the insurance, but I really don't look forward to getting the body work done AND getting another new windshield put in. I equally don't want to have rust eating away at the pilot.

For now it has a fresh coating of primer on all the rust spots (the installer was top notch) and I have the photos for the body shop/insurance when I figure out what to do next.

...maybe I will just use this as a reason to get a two-tone paintjob on the pilot. -_-

OE glass is made by the people that sell it aftermarket. What you have there is a crappy installation.
I went thru the same thing 14 years ago. It rusted out the roof. Sell it and move on

That just sounds bad. Like really bad.

Although, turn a frown upside down... I could make a chop-top Pilot!

Default Not so Bad...

I am willing to bet that if they really cleaned it up and primed it...there won't be any problems worth talking about for many years to come. It never really looked that bad to begin with.
I've seen stone chips on the front that looked a lot worse than that and even after several years they never amounted to much.
I would hardly consider selling off a vehicle because of it....for the most part 99.9% of people wouldn't even notice paint defects that high up on a 4 or 5 year old vehicle.

well yea of course. the car i just traded in needed about 2K of work overall. steering rack was going out, battery was going bad, intermittent failing to start, etc. sure, i can dump all that money into it, but why? i had planned to trade the car in this spring anyway. family had outgrown the pathfinder. if i drop the money into it, then just trade it in anyway, ill never see my money back. at the end of the day i come out ahead. not trying to screw the next owner of the pathfinder. i even left my name & phone # in the owners manual so they can feel free to call me and ill tell them everything. i had dropped 3K into that car already, and had all the service records in the glove box, along with the paperwork for the tires, etc.
