Default Popping fuses in cup warmer

Background: My wife bought me a pair (they came in twos) of electric cup warmers to keep my coffee and hot chocolate warm on the way to work. I plugged one in and took off to work. After a little bit I reached for the cup and it was cool! I looked and the red light on the cigarette plug in was off. Tried to reposition the plug but nothing worked. Took the fuse out and it was burnt out.

Took the second cup and was careful to start the engine and then plug the plug in. Red light on. Get about 1 mile from the house and the light is out. Check the fuse. It is burnt out.

Got a little better cup we had but never used and tried it yesterday. Same result. Within a mile of the house, the red light was out.

I can't say exactly when it burnt out or what was happening at the time as I was busy driving.

The specs on the two matched cups say they are 12 v, 24 W, 2 amp and have a 5 amp fuse in them. I assume the other cup is the same as it has a 5 amp fuse.

Each time I used the plug above the console.

I never have an issues using my Garmin or my iPod in that plug.

Since it occurred in two different brand cups, it appears to be a Pilot problem but why would the cup fuse blow instead of the Pilot fuse?

Any thoughts on what could fix the problem and allow me to have hot coffee on the way to work (50 minute drive) other than putting a 10 amp fuse in or putting a penny in ()

Is the cars or cup holders fuse blowing?

It is the cup holder fuses that are blowing.

That is what makes it so puzzling. I could understand the inexpensive cups having a problem but for the other cup warmer which is a different brand and a little better made to do the same thing seems odd.

I would guess that they pull more than 5 amps, or you got a bad batch of fuses.

Unless you lights are REALLY bright, I doubt there is anything teh car could do to cause it.

I'd return the cup holders and look for a better product.

Are you sure those cup holders aren't more like 60+ watts? Also you might want to consider this instead? My brother tells me it really does keep the liquids hot.
