Thumbs up EGR Valve Resolves MIL and VTM-4 Lights

I had just purchased a 2003 Pilot (lease return) in Toronto in July and drove it back to Ottawa. Enroute I noticed that there was distinct hesitation and vibration at 50 - 55 Mph or 80 - 90 Kph, just between 1500 - 1700 RPM, noticed it in 4th gear as well. I took it in to Peterborough to the Honda dealer and they read the codes, for free, and there were no issues. I had not found hondapilot.org at that time but once back in Ottawa I started researching the problem. Within a few days my MIL light and VTM-4 light had come on and with the other symptoms this pointed to the EGR valve.

I made an appointment at Hunt Club Honda and explained my concern, the person I spoke to agreed that is sounded like it could be the EGR valve so I brought it in. Once I got in there the service writer insisted on having it runs through the diagnois process to read the codes and I agreed. The codes indicated misfires and coil problems so they tried switching coils but that did not resolve it. They charged me for the diagnosis, told me it was probably bad gas and sent me away to run some premium through it. Within a day the lights had come back on again, the hesitation/surge problem had never gone away.

Once the required two tanks of premium had been run through I printed out the TSB and some posts of this site pointing out that similar problems were resolved with the replacement of the EGR valve and that the warranty had been extended on this item for 8 yrs/130,000 Kms. Since the lights were back on and the hesitation was apparent they paid more attention. Also having the TSB, a copy of the letter from Honda Canada and several posts off this site helped as well....

They replaced the EGR valve under warranty and that has resolved both the lights and the hesitation around 1500 RPM. I am now pleased with the performance of the Pilot as it is running smoothly once again and it accelerates cleanly without hesitation.

If you are experiencing this problem, print off the TSB, a copy of the appropriate letter (CDN or US) and some posts from this site. Mention that you are posting to this site about your problem as it seems to focus their attention in a serious way. My vehicle had 128,000 Kms on it so was near the end of the warranty period. I suspect that this behavior may have caused the previous owner to get rid of the vehicle, which was good for me!!!

Default Welcome to the Club '03 Pilot

Hi , nice to hear that your problem resolved.

Exactly the same here, they charged me $98 for the first time, even though they well aware of the EGR valve warranty, as misfire read from stored error code, they just reset the error.

Then 1 week later both Malfunction light and VTM-4 lights back on again.

So they have to replace the EGR valve under my insist, and I said I would pay if that did not solve that, but it did and they refunded my $98 + tax, did they refund your charge ?

Red face No Refund Yet

Since I am away from home at the moment I have not had time to go in and ask for a refund. That is my next step. I will keep my fingers crossed on this one since they charged me for both lights i.e. $98 X 2.......

i had the same symptoms and had my EGR valve replaced. It did nothing to correct the problem. Mine was determined to be bad fuel injectors. It came up with the same codes as the EGR valve problem. Honda replaced all 6 injectors as well. My point here is the symptons can be caused by other things as well. I spoke with engineers at the engine plant in Anna, Oh. They said the codes for the engine are too general to detect the exact condition due to the codes being universal. The VTM-4 code comes up from the chassis but they don't know why. It took me three trips to the dealership with me giving them things to check to get this fixed. It has been nearly a year since and the condition has not returned.

Default injector/egr TSB

Where might I get a copy of that TSB that references the injectors/EGR valve dilemma? I'm goin' thru the $1,000 ringer right now with my dealer. We did the cleaning of the EGR passages, now we're on to "she needs 6 injectors... and we may have other problems. We want to drop the fuel tank..."

I NEED SOME HELP !!!!
