Here's my mileage since i have owned the Pilot. My driving habits changed in 2007 so I expected the drop but it keeps dropping. I have had the Pilot serviced as recommended. Someone suggested changing the pcv value. I looked through my records and I don't think it has been replaced. Would that help my mpg?

Are those samples from each year or the yearly averages? Did you change tires, or have any other changes in driving style, habits, or destinations? p.s. your table is too wide.

I can't imagine the PCV valve being the cause.
I get about 16.7 mpg (Canadian) on average. This is a true 50/50 split highway and city as I drive to work everyday and have a 7 mile highway portion and about a 7 mile city portion. I have gotten as high as 28 mpg highway travelling about 70 mph with a wind on my back, but I average about 24 mpg travelling at 75 mph normally. I have tracked this for almost 65,000 miles. Most of this mileage has been on Michelin Latitude Tour tires My 2003 Pilot has 167,500 miles on it. I get better gas mileage running ethanol based gas...about 10% better Last edited by harley909; 12-31-2011 at 10:14 AM. |

Those are yearly averages. The tires were changed around 100,000 miles or year 7. I got the exact same tire and had them filled with nitrogen.
The driving style did change--more city miles. Of course, I would expect the drop. However, I drove it on a highway trip last week. It was about 250 miles and I made sure to drive 55-60 mph. I filled up when i got home. 17.85 MPG. 5 years ago that would have been 20+. |

I would check the tire pressure. look like your pilot is normal.

There could be a few things contributing to your gas mileage dropping as time goes on;
1. Poorer quality of fuel. (Have you changed where you get gas? I have always bought mine at the same place at least 98% of the time anyways) 2. Wear/lack of Tune up. (Have you changed plugs/air filter/etc lately?) Personally I think that the fuel they sell (especially with prices increasing) has been getting lower in quality. Is regular gas really 87 octane these days? Who knows. I know my Pilot has has had pretty consistent fuel mileage in the 70,000 miles I have put on it. It drops off in the winter for sure which i know is due to more idling/warming up, but I also suspect the gas quality drops off in winter which does not help. No matter whether is is Honda, Chevy or Ford, the advertised mileage is noth but an 'indication" and the best reality is about 70% of what they say it will be. If they say 40mpg then it may realistically get 28mpg. I knew when I bought the Pilot that I would be lucky to get 15 mpg City and 24mpg highway and for the most part I have beat those numbers...but not by much. I am bu no means a "lead foot" driver either. If you put you foot hard into every stop and go I am sure it will drop off alot. |

I get fuel at basically the same 4 or 5 places. It does not affect the mpg in my other vehicles. A Honda service persons suggested I try fuel inj. cleaner. I did and it did not help. He said the dealership could clean the build-up from something. It would cost about $100. It seems like he said the carbon from the intakes but that seemed too inexpensive for that work.

My 04 Pilot lifetime average is 17.34 mpg. '10 Touring lifetime average is 17.17 mpg (so much for VCM). This would be mostly city/highway driving and some longer trips. I have noticed the sweet spot for mileage is about 55 mph on both. You'll get some amazing numbers if you can hold 55 mph. But most interstates are 65-75 now.... the higher you climb the more your mileage goes down. Did learn a neat trick though.... dump in some Marvel Mystery Oil and your mileage will go up at least 2 mpg. I only do this on longer trips hoping it will also clean the engine.

I have a 2006 Pilot with 142000 miles. Just went on a 300mile trip with around 70% highway on back roads with average speed around 50mph, and only got 16mpg.
Around town I get around 13-15mpg. Brand new plugs, clean air filter, recent oil change. Car runs great, just has sucky fuel economy. Wondering how a PCV valve could effect fuel economy, but maybe it's worth a shot...

Always horrible, 14-16, maybe 18 on trips. I am civil with the beast, I wish they would come out with a chip that would modify shift points, increase mileage...
This is the same motor that is in the Odyssey...it gets better mileage and is a bit bigger... |

That's what I get.... I am not that civil, however, but I've never gotten more than 20mpg in the car...
The difference in fuel economy is because Odyssey is not shaped like a brick, and the Odyssey weighs less because it's a front wheel drive-only vehicle.
