Default Replacing Side Mirror Actuator DIY

Wrap the loose wires from the actuator with blue painters tape, forming a pointed tip. Then you can fish the wires through the tunnel running from the mirror housing to where the white wire connector is mounted. See the wire ends wrapped in tape on the other end of the tunnel.

Default Replacing Side Mirror Actuator DIY

Oh, I did forget to tell you that you'll have to cut the old wires to remove them.

Now you need to fish the wires through the spongy gasket sleeve. It's a tight fit, but if you insert two small screw drivers and spread them with your finger, you'll have room to insert the wires. Be patient or you might wrip the sleeve.

Undo the painters tape and insert the loose wires into the back of the white connector. Follow the same configuration as the original connector. You'll hear a slight click when they're seated. Be patient. Once they click into the connector, it's difficult to take back out whouth a lot of giggling with a thin eyeglass screw driver.

When ready, push the spongy gasket in place and attach the white wire connector with the same screws to the mirror housing.

Default Replacing Side Mirror Actuator DIY

Position the actuator in mirror housing and screw it down (4 screws). The screw holes are deep in the actuator so lay the housing on its back, use a needle nose plyer to drop the screws into the holes, then you can tighten them down.

Default Replacing Side Mirror Actuator DIY

Insert the black defogger wires to the back of the mirror.

Lay the mirror housing on its back. Place the mirror over the actuator and push on the bottom of the mirror where it says "Objects are closer than they appear" so the mirror points down. This will leave a gap between the top of the mirror and the housing so you can get a screw driver in the gap between the top of the mirror and housing. Wedge the screw driver, pushing the mirror down onto the actuator. I wrapped a putty knife and screw driver with painters tape to protect the components.

This is by touch so be patient. This will take a little force, but I was careful since I didn't want to break the actuator again.

Default Replacing Side Mirror Actuator DIY

Mount mirror back onto the door with the three bolts, reconnect the wires and trim cover and you're done.

$46.38 (includes tax/shipping) for the actuator from Majestic Honda and two hours of my time. I'm not very handy, so it might be quicker for you, but definately a can do by just about anybody.

I asked the dealer for a quote to replace the actuator only. They wanted to replace the entire mirror, housing and components and color match for $238.

So, the choice was a no-brainer for me.

HSUBOX - great sequential pics. Interestingly in the 2009 model, this weird long awkward spongy tube section was modified so no intricate threading of wires seems to be required. Will share soon...

LaPilota,
Glad to hear you did't waste your money at the dealer and invested your own time to solve. When you dee it done by others, it's amazing how easy it is.
Love to see pics of your DIY.

Thank you so much for your post and pictures. I purchased a 2005 EX-L that needed the mirror replaced. It has been many years since I owned a Honda and I had forgotten how cumbersome Honda makes replacing things such as cabin filters, light bulbs, etc. Had not been for your post I would have had to fork over $300+ to the dealer!

Thumbs up Thank you!

I walked out to my 2005 Pilot and found my left mirror sitting on my windshield wiper. Jumped in the car to take my son to school and he noticed the right mirror was cracked and hanging by the wires.

Bad way to start the day.

I immediately thought of probably needing to spend about $200-$300 to fix it all. I remembered this site. I found your threads and because of them I will only order the right mirror glass and install it. The left mirror I popped on because of someone else's post but yours is helpful as well.

Thanks.
