As I am a new Pilot owner I am looking for advice. I have searched this forum and have read what I could on this but was looking for new information. My biggest concern is my dog, English Mastiff about 190lbs. One review said that the tray would slip and move around, while some concerns for the liner was the velco used to keep it in place. I do like the fact that the liner covers more of the sides (for excess drool) and can extend over the rear when the hatch is up, but the tray looks easier to clean. Does the liner velco all the way around, to the rear seats as well? So my question is for the dog owners out there which do you have and do you like it?
Thanks- AC |

I bought the cargo liner and I have two dogs, but I have yet to use it. I partially installed it after I bought it, and as the Pilot was/is still new, I was reluctant to stick the Velcro down in the rear. There is Velcro on the underside of the liner that 'sticks' to the trunk floor, but every time you pull the Velcro up it tears up the carpet material in the trunk.
I think the success of the cargo liner will depend on how active your dog is. He will easily pull the sides away from the sides of the trunk area if he treads on them.

One other thing - to answer your question - the liner actually fits over the top of the 2nd row seats - very securely. And each 2nd row seat can still be folded.

I had similar questions about weather to get the cargo tray or a liner. I decided against both. I had a feeling the liner would be too slippery and didn't like the velcro idea.
I have 2 st. bernards and the second row is always down when the dogs are in the vehicle. I decided to go to Home Depot and get 6 ft x12 ft roll of outdoor carpet. It took me less than 2 hr to lay it out and mark the exact contours of the inside cabin. It has a perfect fit and nothing on the floor is uncovered. If un-used it folds up and fits behind the 3rd row if being used. We also built a ramp that I wish would've been small enough to fit behind 3rd row. You mentioned wanting sides for drool clean up. I believe the plastic and vinyl pieces are the easiest thing to clean up. I wouldn't worry about them being covered. My biggest issue keeping clean is the outside, windows, and ceiling liner. The whole back half of the ouside gets covered in drool, the windows (inside and out) get lots of drool on them and it gets worse when the window gets rolled up or down, and recently I noticed when ever they shake their heads drool doesn't just fly sideways it also goes up and gets the headliner. IMO, the inside side pieces being covered are not necessary to me.

I've always used a cargo tray in the three different SUVs that we've owned, and we've always had dogs. The advantages of the tray are that it does a better job of protecting the carpet underneath (but not the sides of the vehicle or the seat backs), is super easy to clean, is easy to pull out when you need to get under it, and if your dogs swim or you go to the beach with them, the tray keeps water and sand from getting everywhere in the vehicle.
They are a tad slippery (which is part of what makes them easy to clean), but my dogs have never had any problems staying on their feet. Then again they have learned to just lie down when note their owner having a fit of spirited driving. |

I actually still have and use the oem tray from my 06 Pilot (not a perfect fit!) and a dog seat cover/liner over the second row. I have two dogs; one chessador and one lab mutt that's super tiny!
they both seem to do fine and not slip around on the tray. I always fold down the second row too. The tray has some grooves so maybe that helps with their grip but also the fact that each has a Kurgo harness on and I hook them up to the metal clips on the sides of the pilot ( just behind the second row) to prevent them from being bounced around in case of a sudden stop but still allow them to stick their snouts out the window
