Default HID kit conversion

Hi folks,

All my previous cars have HID lights (Acura TL, BMW etc.,) since the 2011 Pilot does not come with HID lights, I had a shop installed the kit. It took about an hour and the installer said there is no need to hardwire to the battery. He used a canister ballast? and said this is better than regular ballast.

does anyone have any inputs to canister HID kits?

Never heard of a canister ballast. Must not be the correct technical name of it. May be his own term since it is possibly shaped like a canister?

In most cases, HID conversion kits do not require a connection directly to the battery. The ballasts get the 12v+ signal from the OEM headlight plug.

True, but I feel it's safer to draw current directly from the battery rather than through the OEM headlight harness.

It depends on the ballast. The ballasts used in the XenonDepot HID kits are true low draw meaning that you can safely power them directly from the OEM headlight wiring.

Save money same "quality" kits on ebay starting at $35.00- dont be fooled by the bs that cheap kits will go on fire, damage your car, void warranty. These are the same made in china, japan, etc that others are trying to con you into buying at $150 and more.had $40 slim ballast ebay kit in 2009 pilot for 2 years and still working fine.other kit in civic for over 4 years and replaced 1 bulb for $7.00. Spend your money on the hype if you want! I'll put mine in the gas tank.

Here are the photos of my HID 5k 35w slim ballast from ddmtuning. I'll take some photos of the slim ballast if you want to see what they look like. Canister ballast? Never heard of.

I've had the same normal sized ballasts in my pilot for 2 years and still going strong. I don't see the need to pay more for branding hype. They really are all made in the same factories.

Also for our pilots it's perfectly fine to wire the source straight from the headlight connection. But if you want go ahead and order some kit with relays and extra wiring.

Also where did you buy replacement hid bulbs for $7.00?? Now that seems LOw.

Hey guys--first post. I just installed a hid kit from hoen (Hoen high performance halogen ) and am very pleased. It did not have any extra wiring and they seem to work perfectly in the auto setting. Only thing I wish was different is that the connection to the factory harness is just two loose wires, not an actual plug. I just used some electrical tape to keep moisture out. This kit was not the cheapest at $149 but I have had good luck with stuff from hoen in the past.

Don't have them installed on my pilot yet (Haven't had it 2 weeks yet), but I had installed them on my BMW, on my friend's Solara, and on a couple other vehicles.
I got these ones for my BMW before it got totaled, need to get a set for my Pilot soon. $50 + shipping isn't a bad price considering they offer a lifetime warranty on the ballasts. I ran them on my BMW for about 3 years with no problems at all and great light output.

Totally unrelated, but does anyplace make OEM fit projector head and fog lights for 03-05 pilots?

BTW: Someone post a pic of that canister ballast, I'm interested in seeing what that is.
