Default Hitch Question

I am interested in adding a "towing package" to my 2003 Pilot (95k miles). I've looked at the threads here and on other sites. I'm pretty sure I want the whole package (coolers and what not) to tow my boat (about 2,000 lb's). I am just not satisfied with the $1,375 ($825 parts and $550 labor) my dealer wants to do the install.

I've looked at the installation instructions and they don't seem too difficult, but what I am wondering is how frequently others encounter unforeseen problems. I’ve noticed some discussion of bolts breaking. Is that a common occurrence or do most of the installs go off without a hitch?

Also, do most clean the threads, I don’t see that in the installation instructions, but know it was mentioned somewhere as a critical step.

Thanks for the input. Any advice on where to purchase parts would also be helpful if that is allowed here.

Check with Tim (HondAcuraWolrd.com) for a price.

You MUST, very carefully, clean the threads with a tap. (not a bolt!)

As for the rest, it is an easy job.

Given that you are way outta warranty by now, consider using aftermarket coolers. Much cheaper than the pipe with fins approach Honda has.

There are a number of threads on coolers complete with installations.

There are 3 sets of bolts for the factory hitch:

(1) 12mm x 1mm pitch (8 bolts altogether for the underside of the body)
(2) 10mm x 1mm pitch
(3) 8mm x ?? pitch

Any really good tool/machine shop.
