Mostly for my Colorado Compatriots: I live in Northern Arizona and am headed to Steamboat Springs in December.
A: Are chain/cables required on passenger vehicles? B: If not are they recommended for the Pilot? Last year I took a bus (rented full-size coach) from Denver airport to Steamboat. Just shy of the Eisenhower Tunnel we began to slide backwards perilously close to an overpass - Not fun! Anyway, I'm much fonder of getting hurt on the slopes than the road. Any suggestions? |

I'm sure there are others with more experience in CO than my one week trips in Feb. 2006 and end of Mar. 2008, but I can't remember seeing anyone with chains in CO other than big rigs. We rented a Jeep Liberty in 2006 that I only put in 4WD a time or two on Berthoud Pass and when we went over Loveland Pass. This spring, we had a Doge minivan and did not have problems being front wheel drive only on snow-covered I-70 or getting to Snowmass with 6-12 inches of new snow. As long as you have M/S tires with good tread, slow down and don't follow too closely, especially going downhill, you should be OK. California sometimes requires chains or 4WD when the roads are not that bad. It slows people down and may help prevent the 50+ car accidents that occurred on Vail Pass two days in a row while we were there.

B: You will do fine with the Pilot in the snow. I own 2 AWD vehicles, and the Pilot does awesome in the snow. I am running Michelin CrossTerrains on the Pilot and have had no problems in any conditions.
