Default Dealer Protection Package

The dealer applied the protective package to the exterior paint and on the interior on the leather and plastic. Is there any problems with using leather wipes and other detailing products (exterior and interior) even though these other products have been applied?

The protection does not work on your car, it is designed to work at the dealership. The beauty of the "Dealer Protection Package" was designed to put more profit into the dealership and take more money out of your wallet, with some fancy name of a wax and other chemicals, that cost them next to nothing and cost you big time. You indeed have given the dealer their extra protection and profit.

Understood. I knew going in that what I was really paying for is the insurance that if the leather fades in 7 years they replace it (not likely to happen anyway). I spent a few hundred dollars since my fiance is convinced that is worth the extra money and convincing her otherwise is nearly impossible.

That being said, I assume that they simply used a leather conditioner and some wax to make it look good and that if I buy some Wolfgang products there shoudln't be any compatibility issues?

Back to your question. Some dealer packages include a renewal kit. I believe it is for the paint. Not sure if there is one for the interior. I wouldn't worry about it though. Just do what you want to clean and treat the interior.

Smart man. Think of it as insurance that you will not have to hear, "I told you so," for the next 50 years.

Default Dealer Protective Package

For all those thinking of purchasing the Protective Package from the dealership don’t wastes your hard earn money. Dealerships make a huge profit for selling you something that you can just purchase from a good automotive detail store. I recently purchased a 2009 Lexus and the finance manager urge that I buy the Protective Package which costs $2500, but when I said that it was too costly, the cost was reduced to $1000. I still did not buy. What I did get out from the finance manager was some literature about the product used in the Protective Package. So, I did a little research. Thanks to the internet. I found a local automotive detail supply store that sold the same product that this Lexus, Mercedes, Honda, Toyota...etc dealership sells in their Protective Package. The owner of this detail supply store was very helpful. He told me lots of the dealerships buy the same products for their Protective Packages for pennies on the dollar, and then charges consumers big bucks. If you are in the Hayward, CA area you are in luck. The detail store is right there. But if you are many miles away, the manufacture that makes the product does online sales.

Can you briefly describe what is the package composed of?
I could swing by Hayward.

The name of the detail store is P & S East Bay Distributors. You could look them up in the internet. They sell anything you could think of for the interior or exterior of your vehicle. The product I purchased was an Ultracoat Wax for the exterior (same stuff Lexus of Oakland uses on their vehicle's DPP) and an Ultracoat Leather conditioner/protector (this stuff was recommended by the store owner at Hayward as well as the sales Distributor of P & S products). Anyways, after the application of the Ultracoat Wax the exterior paint feels like glass. You might want to leave the Ultracoat Wax longer on the surface of the paint before wiping it off. I left this coating on my car for an 1/2 hour before wiping off, but the dealership claims that the coating is an overnite curing application which I think is a bunch of bull crap. You know another sales pitch that bull**** dealers try to impress the consumers. Good luck!

Thank you very much for your info. I want to stop over there and see what more they have.
Might be fun..

Wow I'm glad I've never succumbed to the Prep Package. Ummmm, nearly any decent paint sealant will "make the paint feel like glass". I just did a detail on my Pilot - first time in 5yrs - did some claybar, polishing with a Porter Cable, and used some paint sealant. Makes the surface nice and smooth, and very slick.

The funny thing is - any NEW CAR should already have paint that looks like glass!!!! So I guess you are getting a slightly slicker feel for that $2500 (or $1000) and the dealer is taking a $10 bottle of sealant, a foam pad applicator and a microfiber towel and in 20 minutes has earned $2500!!!!!! Holy crap what a scam.

I actually hope the next time I buy a new car that they try to foist this on me, as now that I know more about detailing I'd love to play around with them in terms of asking questions.

Interestingly, for many people the cost involved probably gives them peace of mind - some feeling of invincibility now that they have this super "paint armor" protecting their ride. Its really crazy that in this day and age dealers can still get away with complete ripoffs like this - one would think the Consumer Protection Blah Blah Commission would force dealers to charge some price that reasonably approximates the materials and labor costs. Its like charging $1500 for an oil change.....but we use REALLY SPECIAL oil and we'll even give you FREE STARBUCKS COFFEE while you wait! Of course nobody would fall for that, so why do they pay thousands of dollars for a wax job on the car???? Gotta love the American consumer.....

The Financial Manager at the dealer where we purchased our Pilot would literately come close to lying to get us to buy everything.

Luckily, we have a really good detail shop in San Francisco, highly praised on YELP.com. After the initial professional detailing with new car protection on the carpets and leather conditioning, they recommended this product for the exterior and it blows me away how easy it is to use.

Literally after shampooing your car and rinsing, while still wet... wipe on this airplane wax on entire car quickly. Use it on the windows, paint, bumpers, running boards, rims, etc. and do it quickly, like less than 10 minutes, then rinse off like rinsing off the soap suds and dry. It keeps that glassy finish, practically effortless.
