Question Bugs!!

What's the best way to remove 'bug residue', etc., from the hood, grill area, bumper, etc. without damaging the finish? When handwashing with home hose, there's not enough water pressure to just blast it off like when at a car wash - and the wash mitt is too soft to scrub it off.

I use a orange oil based cleaner, like orange-glow or something like that. Cuts through the bugs like a hot knife through butter.

Once you do get it clean, put on a good coat of polish or wax; it will be easier to keep clean. Also, the sooner you remove bug splat, the better. On long over-the-road trips in the summer, I carry wipes and remove the bug splat every time I stop at a rest area. Mostly, it comes right off. I came back from a trip once and the front of my car was covered with ich; it was like driving through a bug storm. The only clean area was where the wipers go. I was too tired/lazy so I left it for the next day. A mistake I will not make again.

What kind of wipes do you use? I can clay it once or twice a year to get it really clean but am wondering what people use on a routine, weekly basis each time they wash the car.

I think it's from Turtle Wax ... "Bug Splat, Bird Turd & Tar Remover", or something like that. As I said, they work best the sooner you use them, but that's probably true about anything. I carry them mainly for convenience, not because they work all that great.

I ride a motorcycle, so I'm very familiar with bug splat on the face shield and windshield. The best way I've found to remove the bugs is to soak a towel in hot water and just lay it over the area to be cleaned. The bugs simply disolve after 5-10 minutes. Then you just wipe it clean. I use a microfiber towel so there are no scratches to the shields. It also works well on the painted surfaces. Other riders say a mixture of H2O and Hydrogin Peroxide in a spray bottle works well.
