Question Pledge?

Overheard someone saying the other day that he polishes his car with Pledge (yes, the furniture polish). Has anyone done or heard of this?

Funny thing is he swears by it and uses it on his car, SUV, and travel trailer. And, he's not a hick or a lazy person looking for a shortcut - very meticulous person who pays attention to the most minor details.

Good god! What's his reasoning for using that instead of a polish or wax? And don't tell me because it's cheaper than buying a quality wax or polish! Say good bye to your clear coat and paint in the next few years!!!!

Pledge is actually a favorite of motorcycle enthusiasts. They use it to shine up the chrome. It works really well on that, actually. I'd never use it on my paint though. It isn't adding any protection to the surface. Other than making it nice and greasy for it to be able to attract dust better with, I really don't see how this is a good thing. Then again, back in the day it was standard practice to grease up cars with kerosene to give it a nice shine. They did this in the 40s and 50s on single stage paint jobs. What were they thinking???

That being said, I don't think Pledge is going to ruin your paint, but the lack of protection on the surface certianly will. Pledge will wash off in one wash and wouldn't last an hour in the buring sun. That isn't any type of protection for modern paint jobs at all. If they are doing it for looks then that is one thing, but anyone who uses Pledge on their car thinking they are giving it a quick coat of wax is out of their mind. I don't even think Pledge has the word 'wax' on it anywhere. Even if it did, then does that mean you can put vegetable oil in your motor simply because it says 'Oil' on the bottle? Some people just don't have any sense...

I didn't think it sounded right, myself. The more I think about it, though, the more I seem to remember him saying something about using the Pledge after waxing - either after the first wax or maybe between waxes - and then something about wiping off dust. So, maybe it is just a way of enhancing shine between waxes. Guess I should have paid more attention to what he was actually saying. If I see him again, I'll have to ask for the details.
