Default Honda quality, almost perfect except this

My 05 EX-L has a small piece of rubber seal sticking out above the license plate panel on the tail door. Does anyone has any suggestion to fix this?

Hrmmm... kinda hard to put it into context in my mind at that angle. Is there any way we could get a more "wide angle" shot?

The rubber seal is nearly by the Honda logo.

I had to remove this panel when I installed the rear view camera. IT IS NOT EASY. Take it back to the dealer and have them repair it. If you just cut it off, you may break the seal and water could seep in.

Hi wwong,

I did not take it back to the dealer because I thought they might just cut it off and I could not prove that they did or they did not do it. What is behind the panel? If I leave it like that, can the water get inside?

The illustration from Majestic Honda shows you what's behind it.

Hello il38694 ,

I have an '05 EX-L as well and have exactly what you showed in your picture...a small piece of rubber seal sticking out to the right of the Honda logo on the tailgate.

I was tempted to cut it or try to force it back in, but what wwong wrote made sense. If I cut it now, 3-4 months later if it rains like it did last year here in Cali, I am going to regret it.

For me, as long as I am in warranty period...it's the dealers work. I am planning to take mine in the next month or two.

That's a good point. Hopefully your dealer can be trusted to do it the right way.

il38694 - I had the exact same annoying problem with my Pilot so I took it back to the dealer during the warranty period for repair...

...you've already guessed what they did to repair it. Snip, snip. Not happy and I probably should have made them replace the whole gasket but I never got around to it.

I have the same problem in the same spot. I too have wondered what the "fix" will be. When I had something like this by my rear spoiler, they just pushed it back it.

I thought I was the only one, but at least 3 other owners have a small piece of rubber seal sticking out in the SAME location. Honda can claim that they have a very consistent quality control.

I did not take my 05 EXL back to the dealer. I know they will just cut it off.

Do I need to remove the inside panel in order to replace the license plate light? If so, I will fix the rubber seal at that time.

I had this same problem on my '03.

I gently pushed the seal back into place, but of course it started showing again in a few weeks.

So, I stopped closing the hatch by pushing on the Honda "H" emblem .... problem solved.

Now I close the hatch by pushing on the license plate. This method has kept the seal in place for at least 18 months.

How did you push the seal back inside the license plate? It is a very tight fit between the license plate and the tail door panel.

It was so long ago that I don't really remember. I did not use any tools.

Mine wasn't actually broken .... just bowing out from the crack. I probably used both hands with thumbs pressing on the bottom edge hoping to get a little wider crack at the top and then using fingers and fingernails to ease the stuff back into the crack.
