Default removing wax on black plastic and rubber parts?

Does anyone have any idea on how to remove the white film that wax leaves on black plastic and rubber parts? I know I should have been more careful but I got wax on the roof rack rails and now it looks pretty bad.

Also, what do you do to prevent getting wax on these parts in the first place?

Stoner Trim Shine will remove it, no problem. Makes the plastic, vinyl or rubber look nice, too.

The only way I know to avoid getting wax on the trim is to use a wax that advertises that it doesn't leave a visible residue on the trim; I can't think of any off-hand.

I think I remember someone telling me that peanut butter does the trick. Anyone confirm?

Yes, and it'll take chewing gum out of carpet.

this might be thread drift... but after the glowing recommendations on Stoner products I went out and bought one of ea.. invisible glass, The trim detailer and the tire shine. I have to say its not as available in So Cal as say McGuire’s (being a local product) but this stuff is awesome. The glass cleaner is great and the tire shine is the best I have ever used. I have not had a chance to use the trim detailer yet, as I really like the McGuire’s exterior trim detailer but I am sure it will be good too. For those of you in SO Cal, I find that Kragen has the best supply of Stoner products and you can get 3 cans of their products for 9.99 with this coupon.

Thumbs up

OK...I took the bait.

Admittedly I was feeling like I was being set up for some type of candid camera stunt. But I decided to try a little bit of Peanut Butter on the wax (Reese's Creamy in case you wanted to know). I spread a thin layer on and then scrubbed it a little with a toothbrush and it seemed to work pretty well. I don't think it was the peanut butter so much as the oil in it. As a matter of fact, I tried a little thin (clean) motor oil on another very small spot and it worked almost as well.

When I had this problem with my other car, I know that no matter what I tried, that the white wax film would come back after exposure to the sun for a few days. So I'll see how these test spots do over the next few days/weeks and keep you posted.

Now does anybody know how to get peanut butter out of the cracks between the plastic and the painted surfaces? (j/k)

Default A little preventative tip

If you don't like taking off wax off the black plastic and rubber parts, mask them off before applying the wax. Use blue painter's tape and you'll save yourself the headache. Masking things off is perfect if you're using the Porter Cable dual action buffer.

Or, you could use Klasse All in One and not worry about getting it on rubber, plastic, or anything else. It doesn't stain and won't leave any residue on the black plastic or rubber parts.

You could also try WD-40.
