Unhappy Pilot Elite Windshield Irreplaceable?

I have a 2016 Piltot Elite, had it for about a year. A few weeks ago my windshield caught a rock on the highway. A 3-inch horizontal crack, on the edge of the passenger's side, grew to a 25-inch horizontal crack by the end of the same day. Now it's about 28-inches long horizontally across the center of the passenger's side of the windshield. (Thankfully, the crack doesn't go all the way through the glass, so it doesn't leak. It just bothers me because the horizontal crack is getting longer, and could grow across to reach the driver's side and that would be a real problem.)

I went through my insurance company and contacted a local windshield repair shop, they've been in business about 50 years so they know what they're doing. They initially said the windshield was on backorder and it would be a few weeks. OK, I thought, that's fine. After about 4 weeks of waiting, they followed up with the supplier (whoever that is) and they said it was on a "hard" backorder, and no windshields would be available for quite a while, possibly years!! Apparently the Honda factory is using them all, and none are filtering through to the aftermarket. At this point, apparently, the Chinese copycats aren't even making them yet. Now keep in mind, this windshield is unique to 2016 Honda Pilot Elite models, so not just any windshield replacement will apply. So I called my local Honda dealer where I bought the vehicle and talked to the parts department. They also said they have no availability on this windshield. Dread is setting in. I called back and spoke to the dealer manager, told him I spent $50,000 on a vehicle that has an apparently irreplaceable windshield. He said he will "escalate it" and call me back. This was around lunch time today, and still no call back. Dread is complete.

I am very, very disappointed that Honda does not provision these windshields. Who ever heard of a new car with an irreplaceable windshield? I have no options. I'm stuck with a damaged windshield until a replacement becomes available. Could be years? What else can I do?

Latest P/N is 73111-TG7-A53.
According to Bernardi Parts, this item is currently scheduled to be available on 9/20 - but it's also possible that date could slip.

Have you tried contacting the parts departments at any other Honda dealers, or a windshield replacement specialist such as Safelite?
Failing that, try calling Honda corporate customer service, or even Pilkington who makes the windshield.

Agree. I'd call Safelite first.

As far as crack, windshields are laminated safety glass. Two panes of tempered glass glued together with a sheet of plastic sandwiched between them. Your crack is presumably in the outside pane only, but it will grow.

Worst case is they put in the version that doesn't have the correct "ports" for the sensing cameras and you have to turn some of it off. It's the shading at the top center, in front of the mirror, that is different between different trims. The sensing cameras need clear ports in the shading. I'm gonna be extra careful not to follow gravel trucks in my Touring!😮

That's a real bummer. Although I'm not a fan of Safelite, call them like the others said and see what happens. Contacting Honda Corporate also isn't a bad idea.

Luckily, you don't have to worry about state inspections in FL.

Have an EX-L with sensing and have had the windshield replaced with no problem. Had to take the vehicle back to my dealer to have the sensing cameras checked for alignment but no biggie. It was replaced by a local shop and I just told them I wanted original Honda glass. They had my windshield in three days. I would think that the Elite would use the same windshield?

Negative. The Elite and Touring trims come with "special" acoustic glass which explains why they're still "irreplaceable" at this time.

I just spoke with my dealer's body shop about windshield replacement about a month ago in case mine would ever need replaced. He told me they've had to replace a couple so far. The glass needs to be ordered through Honda and then they (the dealership) contact Safelite to schedule the replacement. Not sure if all dealers do it this way or not...

Ex-L also comes with acoustic windshield glass so a sensing model should be the same. Touring and elite models add acoustic glass in the front doors and thicker glass in the rear.

There were elite owners on here about a year ago that needed replacement windshields and it took a little while but they got then within a few weeks.

Yeah, EX-L and above get the acoustic windshield glass. EX-L with sensing, Touring, and Elite need the clear port for the sensing camera. Elite needs another clear port for the auto-dimming headlight sensor. So there are four different part numbers for 2016 Pilot windshield:

73111-TG7-A53 Elite
73111-TG7-A23 Touring, EX-L with sensing
73111-TG7-A13 EX-L
73111-TG7-A02 EX, LX

Just picked up the fatal chip last week. Cracked along the bottom all the way across. Now starting two fingers upward at 45 degree angles.....as some brilliant person once said, I hate when that happens. Will have to see what my dealer says.

Just as an interesting aside- I took one of the Honda techs from my local dealer for a ride in my Elite, for a different issue. When he saw the crack in my windshield he said something to the effect of "cheap, cheap, cheap. Honda is making these windshields too cheaply and this is what happens, they crack easily. Older windshields were stronger and wouldn't crack as easily". I'm surprised as a Honda technician he openly said that to me, a customer.

Cheap windshields? Just check the Subaru User's website to find out how cheap a windshield can be made. I hope I never break the windshield on my '16. And I worry about this every time I head out on the highway.

I had a close call. I thank heavens the chunk of wood (from the truck in front of me - towing a tractor) flew off and barely missed my windshield. It left a mark just above the glass. I was lucky. Very lucky.

Took my Elite to the full service car wash yesterday. Guy at the first station asked if I had anyone talk to me about the chips in the windshield. Turns out there were 2 little dings I hadn't noticed. He fixed them for free with a lifetime guarantee against spreading. He also remarked about this type of windshield construction and said it is the best. Just like Mercedes and BMW he says. He feels bad for all those GM/Ford/Toyota/Subaru owners with their crappy windshields.
