Default Question for the DC/MD/VA crowd

If I was to work in Mclean / Tysons Corner VA, (just outside the beltwayt) what MD towns are within a 45 min commute?
If I was to live west in VA, how far out would 45 min get me?

Thanks all

From Maryland, the closest town around the Beltway would be Bethesda, about 1/2 hour from Tyson Corner.

I'm in Manassas, VA, and work in Tysons. It's a 23 mile trip east in the morning on I-66, and takes 45 minutes if you leave at 6:15 am, but averages 1 hour during normal rush hour. We really have an extended rush hour here because of the military, I think. They all get to work at o-dark thirty, and clog up the roads early. I leave the house every day at 6:15, and am normally at work at 7:00 am.

I've lived in the area since 1974, and lived and worked here and in Maryland, and would be happy to answer in detail any traffic, tax, lifestyle etc. questions you have. Maryland and Northern Virginia are very different culturally, politically, tax structure, etc.

Yep, that has been one of the hot topics around the house.

Do we have a nice big place way out where we can afford it (with the way too long commute), or a 30 min commute to too-expensive-and-too-small-ville?

Twenty years ago real estate in Manassas was quite a bit cheaper than the Tysons/McLean/Vienna area. Lately, prices have crept up and you have to be around Warrenton, 30 minutes further out, to start seeing a price drop.

My wife and I had the same conversation... I get the 1-hour commute (leave the house at 4:30 am) and she gets the 10-minute commute. We chose to have a large house (like yours in the NW Burbs) with the 3-car garage in the nose-bleed section of suburbia and (for me to do) the LONG-A$$ commute!!!

While I'm sure the prospective job would have to be pretty good to make it worth your while to move out here, do be prepared for the daily traffic in and around Tysons/McLean, one of the most traffic-choked locations in the entire metro DC area.

If you ended up living to the west in VA, your commuting time would likely be shortened by carpooling to take advantage of the HOV (high-occupancy vehicle) lanes on the major highways heading toward DC. But carpooling isn't for everyone, of course.

Ditto that. I was just thinking this morning about that, as my next door neighbors carpool from Manassas to Tysons.

Good is relative.
In todays job market good, just means better than the alternative.

Actually if it happens it will be a very good job.

True, True.
But I hear you can us ethe HOV lanes with a Hybrid.

Anyone have an old Insight for sale??
(Hmm, do you think they would figure it out if I got a regular Civic and put the Hybrid designation on it?)

Eventually they would. Every Hybrid I've seen, either Toyota or Honda, also has the special license plates on it that proves it's eligible. Plus, you wouldn't want to risk people like me doing a #77 on the cell phone and reporting it to the State Police dispatcher (like they could really do anything about it if they aren't already doing HOV enforcement).

Hmm, wonder if you can bolt a Civic Si driveline into an Insight

Would make one heck of a sleeper!

Simply get a motorcycle and you can ride in the HOV lane anytime you want!!!

I don't do motorcycles!!!

But, for those who warned against a MD commute, would having access to the HOV lanes change that suggestion?
